The naranjilla plant is a spreading, herbaceous shrub to 8 ft (2.5 m) high with thick stems that become somewhat woody with age. This is the SPINED or THORNED variety -- they are WICKEDLY BEAUTIFUL! The fruits on these range in size between a quarter and a half-dollar and are hairy/thorny. The plant does best in a rich, organic soil; also grows well on poor, stony ground, and on scarified limestone. It must have good drainage. Does best in partial shade. Does not tolerate heavy winds. Hardy zones 9-10.
