36+ Yin Yang Beans - Black Calypso Bean - Orca / Killer Whale beans. (Phaseolus vulgaris)

Bring some zen to your garden with this fun bean! These are edible, but also wonderful for a variety of crafting projects. Fun an unusual for kids of all ages to grow.

This heirloom bean is named after it's distinctive markings that somewhat resemble a Yin Yang symbol. They are also known as Black Calypso Bean or Orca / killer whale beans. They have a plump, oval shape with approximately half of the bean black and the other half white, usually with at least one black spot. They are natural, so no two beans are exactly the same and many variations can occur.

The bush type plant grows to about 20" producing pods that resemble a roma type bean. Harvest early, before pods start to dry too much, shell, and cook fresh or let fully mature for a dry bean. 50 days until harvest for fresh beans.

Maturity for dry beans will depend on your climate and the humidity. As with any dry bean, you can pick the beans when mature and let dry off the vine. Harvest as dry beans when the pod is dry and the bean can not easily be dented with your fingernail.
