Erythrina crista-galli is native to central and south America and is one of the hardiest of the erythrina species. I have seen reports online of this cultiver surviving to zone 7, coming back from the roots year after year and being grown as a bush. In warmer climates (zones 9-11) it can grow into a tree up to 20 feet tall. It will also grow and bloom as a container plant and accepts pruning well, but does need full sun.

It blooms strongly with brilliant red flowers in late spring to early summer. The big flowers have a strong flavoured nectar that never fails to attract hummingbirds.

They do need full sun in summer. In winter they are deciduous in all but the warmest climates.
